My name is Amanda and I am currently working on completing my Bachelor of Education. I completed my undergrad of a Bachelor of
Arts in Canadian Studies with a minor in History. During my undergrad I spent a large amount of
time looking at First Nations throughout Canadian history, art, popular
culture, and Canadian identity. I always
enjoyed learning about First Nations in my various courses.
But there was one specific class that was the inspiration for this website. I took an Indigenous Studies class on Indigenous Art in my final year of my undergrad. In that class we watched a film entitled Reel Injun: On the Trail of the Hollywood Indian. Reel Injun is a Canadian documentary on the images of First Nations in Hollywood.

“Hollywood has made over 4000 films about Native people; over 100 years of movies defining how Indians are seen by the world. Reel Injun takes an entertaining and insightful look at the Hollywood Indian, exploring the portrayal of North American Natives through the history of cinema. Travelling through the heartland of America, Cree filmmaker Neil Diamond looks at how the myth of ‘the Injun’ has influenced the world’s understanding – and misunderstanding – of Natives.”

So when my Education class on Socio-Cultural Theories of Learning called on me to create a website on a social justice issue, I thought of how much I gained from studying First Nations in my undergrad and The
Reel Injun, and I decided to build a website for teachers and students around the issue
of First Nations images in the media. I
have acquired a number of resources surrounding this topic in my undergrad, and
this website is a great place to share those resources with my fellow
teachers. This website is not a complete
collection of all the possible resources, but it is a start. And of course there is the added bonus of
building a website on something I really enjoyed studying.
I hope this website will be both helpful and educational!
